We have a few Chilli Churo models now on our racks at Zak Surfboards. This board was deemed the winner in this year’s Stab Magazine – “Sinning Is More Fun In Summer” – a small wave board test amongst a packed field of some of the world’s best shapers. The Churro shape was tested by esteemed pilots Craig Anderson, Taj Burrow and Chippa Wilson – ultimately claiming the number 1 spot.
Initially conceived by James Cheal as a forgiving board with a large sweet spot, the type of board that would cater to a high performance approach in less than ideal conditions. This model was developed in collaboration with team rider Mitch Coleborn over the past year. A design stemming from his need for a kick ass small wave contest board with more paddle, glide & lift than his regular shortboards (as we all know, the wave quality on the World Qualifying Series is generally pretty poor).
The outline of this shape is somewhat like a squashed down version of his signature shortboard (the Spawn) that has been married with a much flatter, faster rocker. This wider outline really helps with generating speed in weaker waves as well as carrying momentum through fat and flat sections. The critical thing with this model is how James Cheal has balanced this extra width within the context of the overall shape – making sure the board isn’t so wide that it cant be surfed with a performance approach.
The rocker in the Chilli Churro is subtle & relatively low from the nose of the board all the way through to the tail. A perfect balance has been struck here with enough curve left in the board to allow it to fit the curl of small wave faces, but flat enough so it won’t feel like it’s pushing water and to allow for excellent speed generating capabilities. A single concave has been used from under the front foot, stretching right back through the tail block and flattening out just behind the rear fin. This concave setup ensures plenty of speed, lift & and lively feel underfoot in even the weakest conditions.
A great board for small to medium wave hifi shredding for the advances surfer, potentially a nice forgiving choice in the right dimensions as an all-rounder for those that are more intermediate. The Chilli Nevada Model has been designed to be an easy board to transition onto from your small wave shorter/wider boards. Described as a somewhat forgiving high performance shape, this model catches waves easily, carries through dead sections with a very positive and responsive feel through turns. What’s more the Nevada does all this with a great balance of liveliness and flow.
The key to this optimal balance of performance and easy surfing is the distribution of foam. A touch of extra volume has been strategically placed throughout the whole board, nose to tail. James ‘Chilli’ Cheal has developed an new neat and simple feeling rail shape that allows for clean and easy carving while still retaining a distinctly performance feel. A rounded square tail shape has been used on this model with a touch more area for motor in mushier conditions, but still tidy enough to retain authority and control through critical manoeuvres. The rocker of the Nevada starts off a little flatter in the top third of the board for speed, gradually increasing through the middle of the board and continues steadily out the tail – again giving you a great balance of looseness and performance in steeper sections.
The concave in this model has been finely tuned though a solid amount of testing with Chilli‘s stable of team riders. It starts under the chest medium depth and gradually shallows through-out the tail, giving you heaps of speed off the front foot and the perfect amount of release off the back foot through turns.

The Chilli Miami Spiceis a new model that we have in store this summer – designed to take your small wave surfing to a whole new level!!! A shorter wider and flatter design with a double bump signature Chilli thumb-tail. The flat rocker and width in the outline really helps with paddle power, wave catching, glide and carry over flatter parts of the wave. The tail is a bit more pulled in than most small wave models giving the Chilli Miami Spice better performance in the pocket, allowing it to sit a little more comfortably in steeper parts of the wave. The Miami Spice features a slight single concave between the feet for speed with a vee off the tail, for quick and easy transitions from rail to rail.
A lot of small wave boards are super fast and easily generate speed in one direction – down the line. Many of them tend to struggle in and around the pocket – mainly because they are too big in the back end. The Chilli Miami Spice overcomes this issue by combining a broader & flatter rockered front end, with tidier back end. The tidier tail combined with a couple of breaks in the rail line (courtesy of the double bump) gives you the ability to make sharp direction changes with ease and do your maneuvers in steeper parts of the wave.
Full size run of these in both FCSII and Futures fin systems have just landed on our racks. Check out the Chilli Miami Spice and the rest of our Chilli Surfboards range in store or look at them individually listed ONLINE
Check out this Custom Chilli Pina Colada that just came through the door this morning!!! This looks like an epic shape, primed for fun times when the waves aren’t co-operating. With a white spray, heavier glassing and slightly different from stock dimensions 5’10″ x 21″ x 2 5/8″ 35.4L Future 5 fin set up.
The Chilli Pina Colada model is a recent design James Cheal came up with as a fun board to help you get the most out of marginal conditions. A combination of influences from 80s twin fin designs to high performance fish shapes, it’s got plenty of area through the whole body of the board and a relatively flat rocker which ensures that this is a fast board that catches waves super easily. The rails taper down to a nice and low the rail line to make sure that this shape still remains responsive and will bite into the face of the wave with ease.
The Chilli Pina Colada has a wide nose is for paddling and skating over flat sections. In the tail end you can clearly see the influence from the classic twin fin era. A single flyer, level with the side fins creates a break in the rail and allows the board’s outline to curve into a narrower swallow tail, giving it more performance in the pocket and broadening it’s wave range.
Remember if you are after custom made surfboard from any of the brands we stock – we can easily organize it for you. Whether it be different dimensions, different construction (ie. heavier or lighter glass & EPS) , specific fin plugs or placement, sprays, tints, pigments & more - it can be done!!

We now have a size run of the Chilli Fader in store on our racks. One of the best looking and feeling boards on our racks at the moment (no personal bias hehe) and no doubt a welcome addition to your quiver.
The Chilli Fader is a high performance whip, primed for good waves. A clean, sleek and speedy outline with a thumb tail that gives you a really nice balance of grip, control and looseness – not too pinny and sticky, but not too wide and flabby for grunty waves.
The Chilli Fader has been designed to have a generous sweet spot, that really helps with quick recoveries from tricky take offs and critical maneuvers – ensuring smoother transitions to helping your flow from the start to finish of each wave.
There is extra volume in this model, in the center by the stringer of the board for paddle power and extra foam under the front foot to help keep you moving through the flat sections. The rail has been kept relatively low, to make sure that this model doesn’t feel too big and chunky board underfoot.
The rocker and concaves in the Oh One are not too dissimilar from other high performance models in the Chilli range, allowing you to effectively ride critical parts of the wave and draw arcs in steeper sections. The thumb tail adds a touch extra curve to the outline in the back 3rd of the board – providing extra hold and super smooth turns. A 5 fin set up gives you the option of the more consistent, predictable thruster fin configuration or you can enjoy the speed and flow of a quad set up.
There is a reason why we keep re-ordering this model – drop by the shop and see what all the fuss is about. Full listing of our current Chilli Surfboards Stock can be found here, live on our Online Store
Chilli Surfboards on our Racks at Zak Surfboards. James ‘Chilli’ Cheal is arguably one of the finest surfboard shapers in Australia today and his Chilli Surfboards brand is definitely one of the most popular that we stock a Zak Surfboards. Here is a quick rundown of the Chilli shapes that we currently have hanging in store:
The Peri Peri
For the past 18 months or so since it’s release, the Chilli Peri Peri has been one of our best selling all round surfboards. This shape beautifully combines characteristics from both a high performance shortboard with a small wave board. The type of board you can ride most days regardless of the conditions.
It has a smooth hip free outline that keeps it fast down the line and helps it hold its own in steeper conditions. This outline combined with a unique single concave to ‘vee’ bottom in the tail, makes it lively, speedy & snappy to surf.
The Chilli Oh One design placed 2nd in 2015′s STAB IN THE DARK board contest judged by Julian Wilson. This model combines a few key elements from several of James Cheal’s most popular models to create the ultimate all round, all condition shortboard.
There is extra volume in the center by the stringer of the board for paddle power and extra foam under the front foot to help keep you moving through the flat sections. The rail is kept relatively low, so it doesn’t feel like a big chunky board underfoot.
The rocker and concaves are not too dissimilar from Chilli’s popular high performance models, allowing you to effectively ride critical parts of the wave and draw arcs in steeper sections. The thumb tail adds a touch extra curve to the outline in the back 3rd of the board – providing extra hold and super smooth turns. A 5 fin set up gives you the option of the more consistent, predictable thruster fin configuration of enjoy the speed and flow of a quad set up.
The brand new Chilli Oh One model is now on our racks at Zak Surfboards. This model placed 2nd earlier this year in the STAB IN THE DARK board contest. Stab Magazine got 11 of the world’s best shapers to create their ultimate high-performance surfboard, for an unknown world tour surfer (6’0/80kg). These boards had no distinguishing markings or logos on them – the idea being that the surfer judged the cleanskin boards on pure feeling/performance underfoot, without any preconceived ideas of brand or model.
James ‘Chilli’ Cheal’s design was voted 2nd best Surfboard of the bunch by test pilot Julian Wilson in this competition. To celebrate this achievement, Chilli surfboards have rolled out this board as a new model off the the exact same file as the board that was made for the ’Stab In The Dark’ project. We now have a bunch of them in the shop too!!!
“The ultimate surfboard gives you feedback. The moment you stand on them you know. It tells you how it wants to be ridden.” – Julian Wilson.

The Chilli Toucan is designed to create a familiar feeling groveler that is easy to transition onto from your regular shortboard. By dropping 2”-3” in length from your standard all round surfboard you are starting with a smaller rail line, that will sit & turn more comfortably on the face of smaller, choppier waves. The volume lost from cutting down in length is made up by the addition of a little extra width and thickness. This shorter wider outline is then mellowed by a rolled deck which stops this board from feeling overly chunky and hard to sink into the wave face.
The wide point of the board has been moved up the board slightly under the chest area. This extra volume up front not only gives you a bit more floatation for paddle power, but also a nice little platform to push off when trying generate speed. The bottom shape is a speedy single to double concave – with acceleration and quick rail to rail transitions in mind. The shape is finished off with a slightly broader squash tail, which gives the board a bit extra up and go in weaker conditions.
All these elements combine to create a shape that feels similar to a regular shortboard, but really kills it in more marginal conditions. A very fast, responsive & fluid small to medium wave ride. Available from us instore or online.
Simon from Chilli just hooked Damo up with a new sled – one of Mitch Coleborn’s cast offs a 5’9 Spawn with a swallow tail. This model is currently available only as a custom order only from Zak’s, probably a model we will stock closer to winter.
