Rocket 9 by Channel Islands

Rocket 9 by Channel IslandsWe have a full size run of the Rocket 9 by Channel Islands in store on our racks at Zak Surfboards.  This fairly new model for CI is quite the performer in a wide range of conditions.  What really stands out when you look at this board is it’s unique outline, it has a distinctly forward of center wide point  and pulls back into a relatively tidy tail.    Despite the pulled tail and relatively pointy nose this board has a decent amount of hidden volume – meaning that you can definitely ride it a fair bit smaller than your standard shortboard, while keeping your normal volume (or even opting for a touch more for extra paddle).

Rocket 9 by Channel Islands Rocket 9 by Channel IslandsRocket 9 Collage 1The medium, constant rocker that kicks in the tail, with a forward wide point and tider tail area means that this model is pretty comfortable in steeper sections and being turned in and around the pocket.  The medium but boxy rail allows you to push hard through turns on rail without the board squirreling out.  A fairly deep single to double concave bottom keeps this model quick and adds a bit of lift.  A touch of vee has been placed off the back few inches of the tail to ensure nice easy transitions from rail to rail and clean release through turns off the tail.

Channel Islands Mini

Channel Islands MiniWe have a full size run of the Channel Islands Mini in store at Zak Surfboards.  Designed in collaboration with team rider Kalani Robb, the Mini was created to add a bit more performance & versatility to an easy surfing, fun surfboard shape.  With an eye pleasing outline that draws heavily on classic fish shapes of the 70s and a few modern performance tweaks,  Channel Islands have successfully created a very fun surfboard that performs in a wide range of conditions.

Channel Islands Mini Channel Islands Mini Collage 1The Channel Islands Mini has a fairly relaxed or low rocker and broad outline.  This combination gives you ample amounts of speed & glide plus pretty darn good wave catching abilities.  A wider nose and extra thickness up front means that you can get you chest further forward on the board while paddling  – which definitely helps to get you up and into waves super early.

Channel Islands Mini Rocker ShotThe Mini has a fairly wide squash tail combined with an aggressive single to double concave bottom which gives this model heaps of board speed and lift – ensuring that you’ll be zipping down the line with ease in even the weakest conditions.  Fairly low rails combined with with vee out the last part of the tail means makes this board quick to respond and really easy to redirect – as a result the Mini is much more responsive to surf than the dimensions would have you believe.  Designed to have a blast in conditions ankle to head high,  the Mini is definitely one of the better boards to check out if you are looking to add a groveler to your quiver.

Channel Islands Black and White Model

Channel Islands Black and White ModelWe now have a full size run of the new Channel Islands Black and White Model on our racks at Zak Surfboards.  The Black and White is an all round, high performance shortboard designed for down the line speed and easy rail-to-rail transitions.  Based on a favorite hand shape Britt Merrick made Dane Reynolds for Santa Barbara area point breaks. This model features a fairly low entry rocker, a staged flat-ish section between the feet, and an accelerated kick through the tail. A single concave runs the length of the board, is deepest near the front fins and shallows into a hint of vee exiting the tail block.

Channel Islands Black and White ModelChannel Islands Black and White Collage 1The  flat deck design of the Channel Islands Black and White offers improved flex characteristics nose to tail, a solid under-your-feet feel and a touch more foam in the rail to push against. It also allows you to ride this board a touch thinner than other performance shortboard models, so keep that in mind when scoping the dimensions.

Board of the Day – installment 2

Hi Crew. Back with another of our ‘board of the day’ posts introducing you all to some of the new stock we have in for summer. Today we are taking a look at a model and brand all the way from San Diego. Zakka came across Sharp Eye Surfboards when he went into a factory to meet Larry Mabile who does Third World Exotic boards (which we also have in stock). He reckons it was probably the most pristine factory he has ever walked into and the boards we have in stock reflect this – the finish on them are flawless. The shaper behind Sharp Eye is Marcio Zouvi who established the brand in 1993. Although relatively young, Marcio has a bunch of WQS guys on board including Fisher Heverly and Oliver Kurtz. Check the Sharp Eye website here: http://www.sharpeyesurfboards.com/

We have a quiver of Marcio’s Disco model which is a high performance small wave board. It has a bit more volume than your normal shorty and a little more rocker than a lot of other stubby small wave boards but it will let you surf like you are still on that normal shortboard. As a result you can still surf top to bottom and tight in the pocket which sets the board apart from a lot of other small wave boards on the market at the moment.

If you are after something a little different and aren’t getting enough love out of the major board brands, get in and check something a little different – bring your dancing shoes!
