Slater Designs Gamma

Slater Designs Gamma!!!Slater Designs Gamma now in store!!!

They’re in – 2 big boxes of the the new Slater Designs Gamma models just arrived in store this morning. Definitely not just a glass slipper fit for the King – these look like pretty epic all-rounder for those of us less gifted wave riders, in the right dimensions.

Slater Designs Gamma

Gamma Collage 1

This model has a beautifully smooth medium rocker, combined with a relatively generous outline (for a high performance shortboard) and a nice medium, pinched rail.  The bottom contour is a single concave, with a touch of double between the fins that eases into a vee out the back.

Slater Designs Gamma Gamma Collage 2

I haven’t taken one of these for a spin yet but this board seems to have quite a few more user friendly characteristics than any Kelly Slater model I’ve put under my arm before. This appears to be a really clean, nicely balanced design – something I’d quite comfortably jump on as an all rounder.

…Lost Pocket Rocket

...Lost Pocket RocketWe now have a small size run of the …Lost Pocket Rocket finish shaped and signed by the big boss of …Lost Surfboards, Matt ‘Mayhem’ Biolos’ hanging on our racks in store at Zak Surfboards.  The Pocket Rocket has primarily been developed for WSL surfer Kolohe Andino. Ready to change up the bottom curves under his feet, this shortboard has a moderate even, continuous rocker, without any distinct flips or breaks compared to his previous signature board designs.  In particular, there is more curve in the center of the board without the usual kick in the tail.  This new curve has allowed Kolohe to approach the critical part of the wave with more aggression and most importantly, without losing speed and drive.

...Lost Pocket Rocket ...Lost Pocket Rocket Collage 1To make sure the rider maintains lift and speed, Matt has also deepened the concaves in this model somewhat from what Kolohe normally rides.  The end result is a great  high performance shortboard with built-in drive that won’t shy away from critical sections.  Although designed for a pro, this design does have a touch more volume than many high performance shortboards and a little extra surface area to keep you planing.  It probably can be ridden quite successfully in the right dimensions by those of us that aren’t quite at pro level yet ;)

...Lost Pocket Rocket ...Lost Pocket Rocket Collage 2Designed to be responsive and fun in small snappy beach breaks and excels in chest high to decently overhead – come and check out these …Lost Pocket Rockets in store or ONLINE

Channel Islands Fever

Channel Islands FeverWe have a full size run of the new Channel Islands Fever model in store at Zak Surfboards.  This new model was developed to add a new, relatively user friendly & accessible high performance surfboard to the Channel Islands range.  The type of board that would work for a broader number of people – rather than just experts & pros.

Channel Islands FeverChannel Islands Fever CollageCreated as a collaboration between team rider Patrick Gudauskas and Channel Islands in house shaper Mike Andrews  – they grabbed Pat’s favorite features from other high performance models of the past and combined them with a subtle single concave and lower, relatively continuous, user friendly rocker.  The combination of these two features has created a shape with a huge sweet spot.

The Chanel Islands Fever also has an outline with less curve, giving it heaps of speed and projection down then line, helping it to pick up speed with ease and chase down those sections that try to get away from you.  This speedy outline combined with the moderate continuous rocker vastly broadens the range of conditions and wave types that this performance shortboard works in.   Comfortable in anything from 2 foot soft beach breaks to faster, down the line point waves, to overhead hollower & chunkier days.  You can ride this board in most conditions from quite average, to where a proper step up is required.

IMG_5956 Channel Islands Fever Collage 2If you are in the market for a high performance all-rounder, this model is definitely worth checking out.  The Channel Islands Fever is well suited local waves with a great combination of speed, acceleration and responsiveness.  A full size run is currently on our racks – come by the store or check them out ONLINE

DHD XRS Model

DHD XRS ModelThe DHD XRS Model is small wave fun distilled in foam and fibreglass .  A finely tuned design  perfected by Darren Handley with his stellar team of test pilots on the Gold Coast.  This model features a nice full outline, with a relatively flat rocker line – with just enough flip strategically placed in the nose & tail to fit into those super tight small wave transitions. This little board has about as much high performance potential as you can squeeze out of a groveller and is sure to make even the most marginal waves fun.

DHD the Twin model

DHD the Twin modelWe have the DHD the Twin model on our racks at Zak Surfboards. A super fun, user friendly shape that draws influence from the classic twin fin shapes from the 80s made famous by Mark Richards.  A great board for a variety of skill levels -  it is a shape that in the right dimensions, will work well for intermediate up to the advanced level surfers.  If you are bored with more conventional shapes or want something fun for average days, definitely check this model out!!

DHD the Twin Collage The bottom shape of this board is flat in the front end for increased speed and less stickiness – a slight single concave runs through the guts which feeds into a deeper to double with a vee through the last part of the tail.  There is a small single channel that runs off each of the side fins for extra drive.

DHD the Twin 1 7Underfoot, this is a super fun speedy shape to ride with great maneuverability – tailor made for surf from the 0.5 to 4 foot mark. The amount of lift and speed this shape generates, really does a lot of the work for you when the waves are gutless.  The twin fin set up allows the rider to draw super tight arcs on on smaller wave faces, or use that turning ability to get a bit more creative & draw some different lines in better waves.

SuperBrand Fling Superflex

SuperBrand Fling Superflex We have just got a few of the SuperBrand Fling Superflex for our racks.   The SuperBrand Fling is performance driven, contemporary take on a Simmons or Keel fish design. It takes the best fun & functional elements of those retro shapes and fuses them with a high performance rail, rocker, foil and bottom curve.

SuperBrand Fling SuperflexSuperbrand Fling CollageThese boards are purpose built to excel in  marginal conditions, with a very drivey, positive feel underfoot.  The Fling generates a lot of it’s own speed and creates a lot of lift which allows the rider to really zip all over weak, fat, mushy & flat wave faces . Super fast down the line, yet able to break line to allow the rider to draw more vertical direction changes which means shortboard style turns and tight carves.

Instead of relying on a wood stringer, these boards have been constructed using Superflex construction technology.   A lively stringer-less EPS core is used which works in conjunction with a woven Kevlar aka “Vector Net” glass construction. Vector net and three types of fiberglass (6oz e-glass, 5oz bi-axial, and 4oz e-glass) gives surfboards a special flex pattern and added strength throughout the board. This construction results in a consistent feel tip to tail and allows the board to flex naturally with the contours of the wave.  The Superflex construction also has a more responsive feel to applied pressure from the rider, creating a positive springy feeling underfoot and in and out of turns.

Channel Islands Campbell Brothers Bonzers

Channel Islands Campbell Brothers BonzersWe currently have a small size run of the Channel Islands Campbell Brothers Bonzers on the racks – How sick are these things?! As many of you know, the boss man has a bit of a crush on all things Bonzer and as soon as he saw these beauties, he had to get some in for the shop.  The two models that we have in store are the Shelter & the Biscuit Bonzer – designs that mesh the decades of board building expertise shared by the iconic Channel Islands label and Campbell Brothers surfboard brands.

Channel Islands Campbell Brothers BonzersCI Campbell Bros Shelter Bonzer Collage 1From their beginnings in the late 60s/early 70s, a short distance of only a few miles of coastline separated Al Merrick and The Campbell Brothers (Malcolm and Duncan).  Al and Malcolm first began working together in 1985, when Malcolm came on board and shaped for Al/CI for over 20 years …while still developing unique shapes with his brother Duncan.  Now (30 years on) a design offering is born out of the combined experience and mutual respect for each others designs.

Channel Islands Campbell Brothers BonzersChannel Islands Campbell Brothers Bonzers CI Campbell Bros Shelter Bonzer Collage 2

The Shelter model is contemporary performance oriented 5 fin Bonzer shape.  Gifted it’s name from the 2001 surf film “Shelter” by Chris Malloy – a 6’2″ and a 6’4″ version of this model were ridden in the movie by surfers Taylor Knox & Donovan Frankenreiter to great effect.  The Shelter is a versatile all round shape, that has been designed to perform well in a wide variety of conditions.  You can surf this model at a similar size, width and thickness to you favorite short board.  The distinguishing characteristics of this board are swift, catch free rail to rail transition and a tremendous amounts of drive.  Bonzer designs are also known for maintaining speed exceptionally well through carving maneuverswally waves of Victoria watch out!!!

Channel Islands Campbell Brothers Bonzers CI Campbell Bros Biscuit Bonzer Collage 1The Biscuit Bonzer combines the extremely popular Channel Islands Biscuit model with a the Campbell Brothers bonzer bottom contours and fin set up. The ultra-flat rocker and pronounced spiral vee really meshes well with the Bonzer 5 fin set up resulting in a super fast but still relatively forgiving speed machine.   The flat rocker and relatively generous foil ensures early wave entry, great paddling speed and glide galore once on a wave face.  The reasonably curvy outline and spiral vee in the tail helps tighten up the arcs you can draw, making it easier to put and keep this board on rail .  The Biscuit Bonzer is a great model to spice up your surfing in small to medium sized waves with a really nice, lively feel underfoot.

JS Industries Monsta Box HyFi

JS Industries Monsta Box HyFiWe have a size run of the JS Industries Monsta Box HyFi on our racks at Zak Surfboards!!!  Topped up last week, the JS Monsta Box has been one of our best selling shortboards in store since its release.  Initially conceived to combine the best features of two of JS’s best selling models into one board (The Monsta & The Blak Box II) The end result was a new model that  worked for a broader range of surfers and in a much wider range of conditions.

JS Industries Monsta Box HyFi JS Industries Monsta Box Hy-Fi Collage 1This Monsta Box model has less rocker than the Monsta but a touch more curve than the Blak Box II.  The outline is more generous than the Monsta, but not as broad as the Black Box II.  The tail block also sits somewhere in between these two models with a nice hip drawing back into a rounded square tail.  A sweet single to double concave will give you plenty of lift to help you get up and running in quickly.

Advanced surfers will find this board a great choice for smaller, weaker, flat faced waves. The extra paddle power and speed you will get from this model compared to most performance shortboards will keep a smile on your face in more marginal conditions. A board that works well in the mush but can be surfed in decent waves as well – if needed.

Less skilled (or less regular) surfers will probably find this board a great choice as an all rounder.  One of those designs that does an excellent job of combining forgiving and performance elements.

JS Industries Monsta Box HyFi JS Industries Monsta Box Hy-Fi Collage 2The relatively new HYFI construction technology has been developed by JS Industries over the past 2-3 years.  Through a rigorous RND process, JS have come up with a patent pending Hybrid Fiber Diamond EPS construction (or HYFI for short).  It is a multi-layer construction that apparently feels completely unique underfoot – like nothing else out there.  The glassing process that they use essentially creates an exoskeleton that makes this surfboard construction lighter and significantly stronger than ever before, while creating the perfect flex to maximize performance…

Stacey Machine Head Restock

Stacey Machine Head RestockWe just got a Stacey Machine Head Restock  so there is now in a full size run hanging on our racks here at Zak Surfboards.  Recently added to added to their range – The Stacey Machine Head is Lee Stacey’s update to one of the most popular selling all round shortboards we’ve had in store over the past year – the 5150.  Designed to get the job done in 80% of the conditions the ocean will throw at you – the Stacey Machine Head is a fantastic addition to everyone’s quiver in the right dimensions.  Without doubt, one of the best balanced boards in the shop – put it under your arm and you’ll immediately know what I’m talking about.

Stacey Machine Head Restock Stacey Machine Head Collage 1The Machine Head design features a mid entry rocker for paddle, instant speed off the mark & carry over flatter sections. The outline is super easy on the eye, enough width in the right places and nicely pulled in where it needs to be for all round performance shralping.  This model has a single to double concave bottom with vee running out the tail.   The concaves have been specially tuned in this update from the 5150 to give an even bigger sweet spot.   This new bottom contour also gives this board a nice, safe & settled feeling at high speed and through critical parts of the wave, while still allowing enough lift to make it hold its own in less than ideal conditions.

Rocket 9 by Channel Islands

Rocket 9 by Channel IslandsWe have a full size run of the Rocket 9 by Channel Islands in store on our racks at Zak Surfboards.  This fairly new model for CI is quite the performer in a wide range of conditions.  What really stands out when you look at this board is it’s unique outline, it has a distinctly forward of center wide point  and pulls back into a relatively tidy tail.    Despite the pulled tail and relatively pointy nose this board has a decent amount of hidden volume – meaning that you can definitely ride it a fair bit smaller than your standard shortboard, while keeping your normal volume (or even opting for a touch more for extra paddle).

Rocket 9 by Channel Islands Rocket 9 by Channel IslandsRocket 9 Collage 1The medium, constant rocker that kicks in the tail, with a forward wide point and tider tail area means that this model is pretty comfortable in steeper sections and being turned in and around the pocket.  The medium but boxy rail allows you to push hard through turns on rail without the board squirreling out.  A fairly deep single to double concave bottom keeps this model quick and adds a bit of lift.  A touch of vee has been placed off the back few inches of the tail to ensure nice easy transitions from rail to rail and clean release through turns off the tail.

Stacey 6505 Round Tail

Stacey 6505 Round TailThe Stacey 6505 Round Tail is a performance shortboard shape with a bit of extra spark in the lower end of the wave range.  If you have been looking for a board that revels in small to medium sized waves, that still has all the spark of a high performance whip through turns, then this model is definitely worth checking out.

Stacey 6505 Round Tail Stacey 6505 Round Tail Collage 1One of the key features to the 6505′s performance is the finely tuned rocker.  This model has a lower entry rocker makes for easy paddling and glide through flatter sections.   The rocker through the rest of the board is also fairly low with a late flip through the very last bit of the tail which is the key to keeping it fast, loose and lively to turn.

A neutral single concave bottom has been used for it’s uncompromising speed.  This board really accelerates from the take off, ensuring you generates oodles of momentum off the mark.  Interestingly the concave continues right out the back of the tail (quite possibly the key to its extra spicey feel in small waves) helping water draw quickly though the underside of the board.

Stacey 6505 Round Tail Stacey 6505 Round Tail Collage 2The round tail helps make your turns extra smooth, it also helps to minimize any catching of rails and also gives the board a touch more hold in steeper, critical sections.  The round tail also serves to give this version of the 6505 a slightly bigger wave range than previous versions of this model.

…Lost Voodoo Child Model

...Lost Voodoo Child ModelWe now have the …Lost Voodoo Child Model in store hanging on our racks at Zak Surfboards.  This is the first Mason Ho Pro Model surfboard, designed by shaper Matt Biolos  with feedback & creative input  from Mason.

...Lost Voodoo Child Model ...Lost Voodoo Child Collage 1The…Lost Voodoo Child Model is a mash-up of classic and current performance surfboard designs. Successfully combining the forward glide & projection off the front foot of shapes from the 80s, with the quick turning, loose, high performance demands of today’s progressive surfing off the tail.

The Voodoo Child has quite a unique outline compared to  most of the performance shortboards we have in the shop – with a pulled in nose, that broadens into a fairly parallel outline through the center of the board (for drive), that then leads into a distinct hip and finished with a wide squash tail.  This outline encourages quick, angular direction changes, particularly in and around the pocket which is evident in the 80s inspired lines that Mason likes to draw.

A beaked nose has been used in this design to help to carry a bit of extra volume forward into the nose – assisting with glide and paddle power .  The beak design also allows the shape to keep thickness in the nose and maintain a flatter rocker line through the front end of the board (because you don’t  have to kick up the rocker from the bottom to meet the nose like you do in most contemporary designs).

Don’t let all this talk of easy surfing and all things retro dis-way you though, this is no retro craft -  The Voodoo Child is more than capable of any of the cutting edge lines you want to take.MasonHo_brentbielmann286The Voodoo Child has a lower than typical nose rocker, a relaxed curve through the centre and a healthy kick in the tail.  Flatter in the nose and middle for paddle, acceleration and glide – with extra curve in the tail for quick & responsive direction changes.   The Voodoo Child also features a very modern, high performance, concave bottom -with a generous single to double concave – the deepest part being between the fins, under your back foot.   The curve and concave have been specially blended to easily generate speed, whip tight radius carves and allow controlled release for tail free maneuvers.

...Lost Voodoo Child Model ...Lost Voodoo Child Collage 2The rails on this model are full, forgiving and tucked soft throughout the length of the board.  The rails are foiled down in the last 12 inches of the tail, keeping a touch more volume under the rear foot for stability, while still allowing you knife into the wave face.

All these elements combine to create a fairly easy to ride & generously proportioned all around short board – definitely a pretty interesting model to look at, come in store and check the Voodoo Child and the rest of our …Lost Surfboards models in store or browse them ONLINE

Twin Fin Surfboard Models

Twin Fin Surfboard ModelsWe have a bunch of epic Twin Fin Surfboard Models in store at the moment at Zak Surfboards.  If you have been thinking about going twin there are quite a few different ones you can choose form hanging on our racks in store.

Twin Fin Surfboard Models DHD Twin Fin Twin Fin Surfboard Models DHD Twin FinFirst off and probably the most regular short board-like is the DHD Twin Fin. A super fun, user friendly shape that draws influence from the classic Mark Richards shapes from the 80s.  A great board for a variety of skill levels -  it is a shape that in the right dimensions will work well for intermediate up to the advanced level surfers. Bored with more conventional shapes? Something fun for average days? Love 80s twins but would love something a little more contemporary? Definitely check this model out!!

Twin Fin Surfboard Models - Zak Twin Fin Fish Twin Fin Surfboard Models - Zak Twin Fin Fish

Next up is probably the most traditional of the bunch – it’s the Zak Twin Fin Fish.  This model is Zak’s take on a classic twin keel fin fish design.  Plenty of foam up front for paddle power and float – this tapers down to a relatively sharp refined rail through the tail.  The finer rail through the tail keep you engaged in the wave face, providing much needed bite and control at high speed and in steeper parts of the wave.  One of the funnest boards you will ever surf, with speed to burn  and great maneuverability. A great board  to ride, in even in the weakest & mushiest conditions!

Twin Fin Surfboard Models - DHD Mini Twin Twin Fin Surfboard Models - DHD Mini TwinFinally & probably sitting somewhere between the previous two models is the DHD Mini Twin.  Designed as a collaboration between DHD team rider Asher Pacey & Darren Handley.  Based on a  classic keel-fin fish outline but bought into the present with some distinct modern tweaks.

The modern influence can be seen most prominently in the bottom contour of this board -  with a  slight single to double concave running through the guts of the shape with vee out the tail.  This concave into vee gives you a great combination of speed, lift and smooth, clean & easy rail to rail transitions. This shape screams fun and personally I cant wait for us to get our demo so I can take one for a spin;)

On a Twin Fin you’ll skate where others sink, carve while others crab – fun times indeed… come and check these models out in store or browse our full collection of new surfboards, individually listed & photographed ONLINE

Superbrand Pug

Superbrand PugWe have a run of the new Superbrand Pug model in store at Zak Surfboards. New for 2017, the Superbrand Pug is a shrunken down cousin of the very popular PigDog model.  Specifically designed for fun times in small to medium sized waves – these things look like epic fun.

Superbrand Pug Superbrand Pug Collage 1The extra breadth has been added to the plan shape of the Pug resulting in a fairly a full outline with plenty of width in the nose and tail which gives this board extra paddle power and more glide over flat sections.  The Pug also has deeper concaves than the PigDog for extra speed and lift in weaker waves.  Unlike a lot of boards with comparable proportions, the Pug does have a fairly sporty rail and tail rocker for quick and lively turns on smaller wave faces.

Doug Rogers Shapes

Doug Rogers ShapesWe have a few pretty choice Doug Rogers Shapes on our racks at the moment at Zak Surfboards.  These beautiful hand shapes were made in Torquay by the master craftsman with close to 50 years shaping experience under his belt.

Doug Rogers Shapes Doug Rogers Shapes Collage 1Doug prides himself on making some of the best balanced shapes going round.  He focuses on how water flows along the bottom of each shape – making sure each board grips the face of the wave when it should, releases at the right time through turns, allowing you to connect maneuvers with heaps of flow, without losing speed down the line.   Beautiful balanced outlines and foils are the name of the game, nothing extreme, expertly blending all elements of the design together.

Top Up of the Pyzel Sure Thing Model

Pyzel Sure Thing ModelWe have just got a Top Up of the Pyzel  Sure Thing Model for our racks here at Zak Surfboards.   Specially designed to give an unrivaled combination of Performance and Fun, the Pyzel Sure Thing is the perfect addition to your quiver this summer or for year round fun in less than ideal waves.  This model has a full-figured, yet streamlined outline with plenty of glide to help you speed along in even the weakest surf.  It does still manage to feel pretty darn snappy, responsive and on point through turns though.

Pyzel Sure Thing Model Pyzel Sure Thing Model Collage 1The wide, fuller outline gives a nod to classic designs of the 1980s, most apparent in its subtle double-bump squash tail.  A fair amount of meat has been left in the nose, giving you a distinct paddling advantage with great wave pick up, heaps of lift and drive from the get go.  There is plenty of curve in the outline and the rocker has been expertly blended to match with a nice constant medium to low curve from nose to tail.

The Pyzel  Sure Thing has a fairly deep single concave for lift and speed which then runs into a gentle Vee out the tail.  A pair of “Gas Pedal” channels have been placed between the fins in the last 9” of the tail for added projection and drive, while allowing for a nice tight turning radius.  Even though this shape has a fair bit of extra foam & float to it, the rail thickness has been kept fairly moderate, which keeps this shape nice and responsive, ensuring the quick reaction times required in smaller waves.

Chilli Nevada Model

Chilli Nevada ModelWe currently have a full size run of the Chilli Nevada Model on our racks at Zak Surfboards!!! This recent addition to the Chilli Surfboards line-up is a high performance all-rounder that by all reports slays it in our local waves down here in Vicco.

Chilli Nevada ModelChilli Nevada Model Collage 1The Chilli Nevada Model has been designed to be an easy board to transition onto from your small wave shorter/wider boards. Described as a somewhat forgiving high performance shape, this model catches waves easily, carries through dead sections with a very positive and responsive feel through turns. What’s more the Nevada does all this with a great balance of liveliness and flow.

The key to this optimal balance of performance and easy surfing  is the distribution of foam. A touch of extra volume has been strategically placed throughout the whole board, nose to tail. James ‘Chilli’ Cheal has developed an new neat and simple feeling rail shape that allows for clean and easy carving while still retaining a distinctly performance feel. A rounded square tail shape has been used on this model with a touch more area for motor in mushier conditions, but still tidy enough to retain authority and control through critical manoeuvres. The rocker of the Nevada starts off a little flatter in the top third of the board for speed, gradually increasing through the middle of the board and continues steadily out the tail – again giving you a great balance of looseness and performance in steeper sections.

Chilli Nevada ModelChilli Nevada Model Collage 2The concave in this model has been finely tuned though a solid amount of testing with Chilli‘s stable of team riders. It starts under the chest medium depth and gradually shallows through-out the tail, giving you heaps of speed off the front foot and the perfect amount of release off the back foot through turns.

DHD Mini Twin

DHD HeaderWe finally have the DHD Mini Twin in store at Zak Surfboards. Designed as a collaboration between team rider Asher Pacey & Darren Handley.  Based on a  classic keel-fin fish outline with a few modern tweaks.  The wide point is definitely front of center in the outline of this shape, the rocker is fairly low and there is quite a lot of volume forward, with a thinned our tail that has a nice sharp edge.  All these elements are very much in keeping with classic fish designs.

DHD Mini TwinThe modern influence can be seen most prominently in the bottom contour of this board -  with a  slight single to double concave running through the guts of the shape with vee out the tail.  This concave into vee gives you a great combination of speed, lift and smooth, clean & easy rail to rail transitions.

DHD Mini TwinDHD Mini Twin Collage 1AA beaked nose has been used in this design which helps to carry a bit of extra volume forward into the nose  which helps with glide and paddle power .  The beak design also allow the shape to keep thickness in the nose and maintain a flatter rocker line through the front end of the board (because you don’t  have to kick up the rocker from the bottom to meet the nose like you do in most contemporary designs).
